Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear during a massage? If you are having a shorter back massage or a face massage, you can take off the top half of your clothes (including your bra if you are a woman). You will be provided with a clean towel to drape over your body. If you are having a full body massage, please keep your underpants/knickers on and remove the rest of your clothes. You’ll have a towel that will remain draped over your body while you are having your massage. Please don’t wrap the towel around your body (like in the movies) as it stops me from being able to get to your skin.

What’s the difference between a sports massage and a deep tissue massage? The difference is the goal of the massage. If you are very active, are training for an event or you have an injury, the aim of the massage is to improve the health of the muscle groups affected. There are various techniques used, one of which is deep tissue work. A deep tissue massage on its own can be relaxing. It is most often booked by my clients who have back pain.

Do I need to drink more water after a massage? No you don’t. There is no evidence to show that massage makes your body eliminate more water. If you have had a painful sports massage and you’ve been sweating a lot, then you will most likely feel thirsty. If you feel thirsty, drink water.

Does massage release toxins? No it doesn’t. Your liver detoxes your body. There is nothing any massage therapist can do to increaser toxin release. It’s simply not possible. There is also no tea or superfood you can take to detox you. Don’t waste your money.

Why do I feel spaced out or dizzy after a massage? Your blood pressure may drop during your massage, as you relax or if you are tired. If it does, you may feel that spaced out feeling as you get up from the massage table. Take it slowly, sit down, drink some water and relax. As your blood pressure rises again, you’ll feel more like yourself, but more relaxed. Some massage therapists attribute this feeling to toxin release. It has nothing to do with toxins as they are not released in bulk during a massage.

Can massage help to get rid of cellulite? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Massage oils or creams may help hydrate the skin, improving its appearance of the skin. Cellulite is deeper in the body and there is no massage that can destroy it. It’s a natural part of being human. I have had clients who are professional ballet dancers and who have cellulite. It’s totally normal.

Can massage help me lose weight? Unfortunately, no. If you are reducing your calorie intake and are doing more exercise, massage may help your muscles to relax if they are tight from all the new exercise. That’s it, I’m afraid. I can’t help you lose weight with massage. There’s no quick fix.

Is it safe to have a massage in pregnancy? Pregnancy massage can be beneficial and is safe, provided you’re seeing a qualified massage therapist. Most massage therapists will only see you from your second trimester onwards. This is because the risk of miscarriage is higher in the first trimester. While massage is unlikely to raise the risk, to avoid any uncertainty on the part of my clients, I only offer it from the second trimester.

Can massage cause me to go into labour? I have had a few clients who are at or over their due dates, who have asked me to give them a massage to bring on labour. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that massage can do. Your baby comes when he or she is ready. I also had one client who didn’t want to go into labour just yet, who was unsure whether or not to have a massage. Once again, if your body isn’t ready to give birth, having a massage won’t help you. While you will find acupuncturists offering to help you go into labour, please note that they will most likely tell you that this may work the first time or the second or third, etc. Basically, that means it doesn’t work. If it did work, it would work the first time for everyone.
